The wrecking ball has crashed into the Germania. A city contractor began the demolition of the building at about 4:00 P.M. this afternoon. Work is expected to continue tomorrow.

What about the Carnegie Library? The City got $1 million to "rehabilitate" the old Carnegie, the oldest Carnegie Library in Illinois according to John Cook, but they got the money and put it toward constructing the new library all the while telling Freeporters that we would have a public reuse for our Carnegie Library, one of the most historic buildings in all of Illinois. Why did they take this $1 million away from the Carnegie and spend it on our new library. No we don't value our history here.
